Prevent Fires Caused by Heating

  • Fire safety authorities recommend having professionals inspect and clean, or repair all your heating equipment each year. This includes your furnace, coal or wood stoves, fireplaces, chimneys and flue pipes.
  • Consider covering fireplace openings with metal or glass fire safety screens and keeping any flammable objects at least three feet from the fireplace.
  • You can reduce the risk of fire from a space heater by keeping it at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including drapes, upholstery, clothes or newspapers.
  • It is a good habit to turn off portable heaters before leaving the room or going to bed. Fire safety experts suggest that young children should not be left alone with portable heaters in use.
