Prevent Fires Caused by Gasoline and Other Items
- Fire safety experts encourage taking extra precautions in storing and using flammable liquids such as gasoline, acetone, lacquer thinner, alcohol, turpentine, contact cements, paint thinner, kerosene and charcoal lighter.
- Gasoline and other combustible products can produce invisible explosive vapors that can be ignited by a small spark or flame at a considerable distance from the container. Fire experts suggest using these flammable liquids only in well ventilated areas.
- Another recommendation by fire experts is if gasoline and other flammable liquids are kept near your home, they should be stored in a garage or shed outside the house. To avoid the potential of breakage, they also recommend not using glass containers for these substances.
- Gasoline is not intended as a fire starter. Fire safety authorities strongly advise against using gasoline to light anything, and urge us to use extreme caution when refueling gasoline-powered equipment.
