Have you considered...
Portable heaters radiate sufficient heat to pose a fire threat. We are reminded by fire safety authorities to make sure to have sufficient space between your heater and furniture, drapes and other flammable materials. Learn how to check that cords are in good condition and connecting outlets are not overloaded.
Keep all flammable items far away from your fireplace. Fire safety authorities recommend not using fire hearths and mantles as storage for flammable materials. While you may store your fire logs near to the fireplace, it is also recommended to keep those materials contained and out of the way of an open fire. You may consider having a fire extinguisher close at hand.
Fireplaces should always be covered with a proper fire screen to contain sparks and burning wood. Chimney fires are a real danger, and it is recommended by fire safety authorities that an annual inspection by a qualified professional is an important safety precaution.
If someone smokes in your home, make sure there are plenty of ashtrays and all smoking material is put out before leaving the room. The safest policy is to smoke outside of the house.
Improper use of candles poses a risk. If you use candles, make sure they are secured in a proper candleholder. Keep them far away from any flammable materials like curtains, blankets, furniture or decorations to name a few. Children can be fascinated by candles but need to be educated about their dangers. Young children should never be left alone with burning candles in any room.
