The Bedroom
Today's busy families use the bedroom for multi-purposes, from restful sanctuaries to children's playrooms and teenager's studies. Being more aware of fire risks and prevention will help you and your family avoid many of the typical bedroom fire hazards like burning candles, over loaded electrical sockets and smoking in bed. Review these suggestions with your family and make them part of your fire safety plan.

- Have you considered...
- Be aware of your lamps and space heaters placement. Are they placed in an area that could come in contact with flammable materials in your bedroom?
- Candles should be avoided when possible. If used they should be secured in a proper candle holder. Don’t leave candles alone while burning, and keep an eye on children who might be tempted to play with them.
- Electrical hazards can be avoided by limiting the use of extension cords. Make sure cords, plugs and outlets are in good repair, and be careful not to place your cords outside of doorways or under rugs.
- Space heaters, like candles, should not be left unattended. It is good fire safety prevention to turn them off when going to bed. Because space heaters usually draw a lot of electricity; cords, plugs and switches should be kept in good condition. Don’t patch a frayed or damaged heater cord.
- Another big danger in home fires is from smoke, poisonous fumes and carbon monoxide. That’s why a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector inside and outside each bedroom is your best defense if a fire strikes while you’re sleeping. Consider a UL registered fire extinguisher always be kept close at hand.
